Free Courses

By Lee Seats, About.com

The Internet has always had deep academic roots and an underlying philosophy of freely available information. What better place to look for free courses and free tutorials? There certainly is a wealth of them out there, but which ones are worth your time? I've assembled a nice selection of links that covers a variety of interests.

The first online courses and tutorials that I discovered were on creating Web documents. In fact, much of what I initially learned about Web publishing was gleaned from such resources. If you have a desire to learn how to write HTML pages, CGI scrips or Java code you will want to check out the free resources I've listed.

You can also learn some astronomy, prepare for college, and more. If you have a desire to learn almost anything you can probably find a free course on the Net.

Take a little time and peruse the list below. Get ready to expand your mind and give those brain cells a little exercise.

  • Researching Companies Online - An outstanding step by step guide to using free services on the Net to do all aspect of Internet research on companies.

  • Web Search Strategies - Strategies Learn how to use the Web to locate the information you need. This very well written tutorial was created by Debbie Flanagan, who is also the author of Researching Companies Online.

  • Introduction to Web Design - This is a very complete course that takes you from the basics of how the Web works to creating tables and using frames.

  • Introduction to Web Programming - And after you feel comfortable with HTML you can progress to Web programming where you learn to use CGI scripts and Java.
